That's probably the most effective depiction of the Black Queen I've ever seen (I'm assuming that's was happening, and there isn't just some sort of joker riot going on).

Whatever it is, it's nice and effectively horrible.  Kudos to the artist!

Yes, looks great!

A random thought. This very visual depiction makes me think that if we actually lived in the Wild Cards world, we might not think the wild card virus is a cool thing. I mean, we readers usually tend to identify with the aces, since most of the protagonists we know and love are aces, but just think how scary it would be like to live in a world where wild card outbreaks actually happened?

Exactly--that s**t would be hardcore scary.

I'm not sure how that would make me think of aces--rather like plane crash survivors?

Is that mist floating around in the bottom panels some kind of disinfectant by the Hazmat/CDC guys?

Either that or 'inside parts' of some kid.

My random thought:  I'd assume that outbreaks like this--spectacular and horrific--are probably rare, given the small amount of "drawing the ace" backstory we've seen from the characters in the books--most of them just have their powers suddenly activate, usually without massive casualties around them.  Something like the outbreak depicted above is more like what happened in Lower Manhattan on Wild Card Day, or in various cities around the world after they received contaminated shipments from NYC.  It's probably the result of a very, very high concentration of spores (possibly in the tenths or hundredths of milligrams/square meter), which the general public isn't going to often run into (thankfully).

I'm figuring that most wild card outbreaks are going to be relatively isolated incidents, with maybe one case in a town somewhere, and then another twelve kilometers away, and four more in the big city another seven kilometers from that town, over the space of a few days.  These numbers, small and spread out, will probably tend to reduce people's mental association of aces with the sheer horror of the Black Queen.

(Speaking of viruses, I had one over the weekend, and felt utterly terrible.  Didn't feel like working on my thesis at all, much less getting out.  So what did I do?  Well, I actually sat around and working all this stuff out mathematically, believe it or not...!!!

I think I'll start another thread, and see if anybody is interesting in discussing this.)

According to the order form on the Dabel Bros. site, there's a Arthur SuyDam variant cover for #1. Is there any chance we can see it?

BTW, Les, if you'd like SFRevu or Bugles Planet Daily (www.buglesplanet.com) to review the book, please let me know (at drewbitt @ aol.com) and I'd be glad to make it happen.
In fact, BPD would LOVE to get a Wild Cards interview going-- if any of you writers in the WC group are interested, give the blog a glance and see if it'd be of interest.
all best,
Drew
